Saturday, June 23, 2007 One dead in Avon crash By Danielle Capalbo, Globe Correspondent State police are investigating a crash yesterday afternoon on Route 24 in Avon that killed a 59-year-old Raynham man. Frederick R. Cournoyer lost control of his car at around 4:10 p.m., crashing into the guardrail in the median. He then collided with a pick-up truck, said Lieutenant Eric Anderson, a state police spokesman. Cournoyer, who was not wearing his safety belt, was ejected from his car. An ambulance transported him to Good Samaritan Hospital in Brockton where he later was pronounced dead. Brian L. Kendrew, 46, of East Bridgewater, who was driving the pick-up, was not injured, said Anderson. Posted by the Boston Globe City & Region Desk at 11:30 AM I've been debating weather or not I should post this. But I figure if anything good can come of it, it would make it totally worth it. The man who was killed in the accident above was my uncle. He was the nicest guy you could ever want to meet. He was a car guy just like a lot of us here in the auto zone. The saddest thing is that he probably would have lived had he been wearing his seat belt. This was the first time I'd ever heard of him not wearing one. I don't know what all of your views are on seat belts. But they can save your life. So make sure you wear them. Life is too short to loose it over a stupid decision like wearing one. I hope that maybe for all of the grieving and pain this has caused my family that it might at least open someones eyes.

The sad thing is, is that it usually takes sometihng so tragic, for those affected to wear it. Theres no reason not to.

^Thank you for your condolences. I'm doing ok. I'm really more concerned about my mom, grandmother and aunt right now. They are all in really bad shape over this.

Yeah I've always worn my seatbelt. But I know a lot of people don't. I can't for the life of me understand why?
Im trying to wear one all the time, i usually just do at night, I should wear it all the time.
I do keep practicing at it to make it a habbit of putting it on when I get in the car.
Most people seem to think Seat belts dont really help and they think they can just hold on to the wheel, true if ur expecting the crash and hit somebody. But lets say ur just driving and dont see the other car thats about to hit u and u dont have timne to tense up ur muscles and prepare for the crash, well then ur fucked.

There's only two people I know who don't wear a seat belt... My woman and my grandmother, but thats only when they're riding in the back.
My grandmother avoids sitting in the front at all costs..
My woman, when she drives or sits in the front she always wears her seat belt.
But, I mean I am still worried that she doesn't wear tha seat belt in tha back.

the seat belt is uncomfortable for me as well, im short so i need to lean foward to see around turns at a stop sign and i gotta lift my self up with my leg to look out my back window when reversing, ever since i got my new job back in feburary though ive been wearing my seatbelt regardless...its about a 50 mile round trip on the highway so anything can happen...my old job was only 5 minutes away from my house

ok wtf... do you position your seat way back and low?
I mean i'm short too, but tha belt ain't uncomfortable to me. And I position my seat well enough so I have a good distance between me and tha stearing wheel but no stretched out arm to reach it.

If you drive sitting up straight like you are supposed to, its not uncomfortable

Actually tensing up is counter productive, and causes more injury. Thats why in a head on collision, one man will die, the other, who was drunk and chemically relaxed, will come out with a couple of scratches. The tension in your muscles is a natural response, but worsens things in the long run, the seatbelt is better.
And if at all possible try to breathe out upon impact if you see it coming. If you inhale deeply to prepare yourself, then you could very well get Paper Bag Syndrome.
