When Clinton was in
office he would announce November as Native American Heritage month. It was not federally
recognize and it was something he had to do year by year. Though I am not sure when he
started that in his term. As well... I have heard nothing about Bush doing the same thing, nor
have I heard anything about it being federally recognize. If I'm not mistaken... September is
Hispanic Heritage month here in Illinois. There is also a Asian Heritage month as well. They do
announce them but they don't really have any special programming like they do for black
history month. I know that WGN is seen in a looooooot of cities across the country. So.. if you
take a peek every now and then, I'm sure that you'll notice it being announced. There might
be "holidays" and other such things that just are not mentioned.

For example there is
an American Indian day in September that's in the Illinois school code that is not recognized.
And beyond that... when I was "working" on the issue I discovered that most schools had
never even heard of such a thing.

I am a white person and I'll tell you right now,
95%(guesstimate) of America is owned by the White people. I'm not saying give anyone a free
ride, but to complain that they get a month out of the year and three channels is just plain ol'
selfish. How, honestly, can you even complain about that? It's not like they make people
celebrate it. And it isn't like African Americans don't deserve it. And honestly man, every
other month is white history month. Be honest with yourself, who did you hear more about
when you opened your history book in grade school? Except for the special lessons saved for
feburary(does anyone else notice that it's the shortest month of the year?) there is literally
nothing but U.S. history. And by U.S. history I mean predominately WHITE history. I don't
mean to come across like I'm standing on a soap box, but things like this are just a bit
offensive.

I would also like to
add about the comment that we wouldn't be in america, speaking english, using christianity,
having real clothes, living this lifestyle, having a computer if it wasnt for the white man us livin
in Amercia and all that thanks to the white man. First there is christianity in Africa (why do

You have a
veeeeeeeeery good point. But I don't think it would be fair to throw all 'white' schools in
there. I've gone to schools that were all white ,aside from maybe 2 students, and they did
make a point (even too much of a point) of mentioning black history month. But I've never
been to a school that's mentioned Native American Heritage month. The first and only time I
learned a snippet of Native History in this country was about The Battle at Little Big Horn in 8th
grade. First and last time a teacher mentioned anything on his/her
own about the impact of Natives in this country. My teacher thought I was
nuts. After he finished telling the 'punch line'y, I laughed out loud (couldn't help it). I thought
it was one of the 'funniest' things I'd ever heard.

After that I REALLY realized how
much Native History was left out of American History. And I decided to write most of my papers
(where I had options to) geared at my culture, and usually the Native side and sometimes the
hispanic side. (There was more mention of African Americans that either Native Americans or
Latinos, usually there was none at all.) That way, I could learn about what I wanted to learn,
and if I had to present it... the people that were awake and paying attention might actually
learn something.

And I agree.... the impact of 'minorities' in this country needs to be a
REGULAR part of our history classes, etc. There should not be any need to have special
months and days for a race. "Every day is American Indian Day." I'm proud every day. I think
the issues should be pushed in the re-writing of MOST of the books in our schools... grade
school on up. I'm pretty sure that most schools that are in all white areas skip over a lot of
things they would mention if they had more non-white students. But at the same time, I've
seen some black schools that skip over a lot of things that they would mention if they had more
non-black students.

It's about getting rid of the ignorance in this country. And you're
not going to do that by teaching children extreme differences. It's the teaching of such
differences that is preventing equality at an early age. Teachers need better training in racial
sensitivity and better material for the children. That in iteself would be the proper start.


But the media? That's an entirely different subject.

real. But... of course... there are plenty that take something too far. Black women that are

Yeah... I personally thing... aside from the
boat trips, that it's very possible that the restoration period was worse. From the restoration all
the way up till the civil rights movement (all depending on where you were living). I mean... I
can't think of what's worse... not being free, or living in fear everyday because someone
might kill me because of the color of my skin... saying that I did something I didn't do. Plenty
slaves went through forms of tortue, but I think few of them were actually killed once the slave
trade was in full swing. I know it sounds backwards. But they were kept as slaves not because
of the color of their skin, but because of greed... money. You kill one you lose
money.

Blacks weren't a threat to society until they were out and about walking
among the "americans". Now they're taking white jobs, destroying white business, and just
making it plain ol' hard to be white. But... they've manage to turn around and make more
money off of us. Drugs, guns, and unrealistic expectations spun by the media. Very
profitable.

As far as white that dealt with racism... it was waaaaay before the 20s.
Emigrants were coming over in the 1800s as well.

Racism is just a mask of greedy, and
"excuse", all though it's a poor one. Prejudice is a result of ignorance. Similar, but a little
different. I look at prejudice as someone thinking all latinos are the same. It just comes from
ignorance. Racism is what I think of when I think of the klan and hitler, and even "minority"
people that try to use races as an excuse. They're doing nothing more than hating and trying
to find a reason why. It just so happens that it's all too often spread, and past down to our
younger generations.

America would not be what it is if it wasn't for slavery. That's
what the civil war was over. Not the equality of blacks, but money. It's funny that most blacks
are democrats when they're the ones that wanted to keep slavery in the first place. It was the
republicans that thought they should be free. Anyways, not... america wasn't built by blacks
alone, but by asians, and latinos, and natives, and white emigrants. It was built by the blood,
sweat and tears of the innocent, those that didn't know what they were working and fighting
for. Those that could care less about putting food on the tables of elitists. People that struggled
for pennies when thousands, millions, and now even trillions are being made off of their labor.
We break our backs working 12 hours a day to feed our children, that grow up without a
parent around to rear them, while the wealthy stay home.

Don't get me wrong,
someone needs to lead and others need to follow, but where is the line drawn?

with most of what u said, and i know that this country was built byafrican african americans as
well as people from other races, but as far as why we have a black history month i think( this
being my personal opinion) we deserve it because we contributed the most to building this
country. I mean the whole southern economy was based on products that were benefits of

I still kinda disagree. I
do agree that the slave trade was a huge industry. But the emigrants that come to this country
still work the jobs that other people over look. Lawn care being the prime example, and I don't
mean that as a stereo type. But that's just one example. Not to mention the people that are
still in other countries... in sweat shops working for small change so big business can make a
killing.

Everyone suffered, and most still are... just in different ways now. But at the
same time... it's my opinion that the african american communitiy got the worst end of such
times, in that the racism that they dealt with then still exists in some forms. Form lighter skin
being "prettier" and perms being the "cure" for coarse hair. The african american community
still hasn't found enough pride in being black. I know a lot of african american women say that
they relax their hair because it's more managable (or easier to comb), but more often than not
the response I get is negative. "I don't have hair like yours." and plenty of ... "I don't like my
hair." "I don't like nappy hair." etc... etc...

Where dark skinned black people are still
teased among their own race.... and on the flip side... light skinned blacks being teased for
being too light, thinking they look better, and tons of other things. I know a few light skinned
black people that literally took martial arts classes or boxing etc, because they had
to...

I think the worse part of it all is that we're turned against one another. Insecure
about ourselves so we say other think they're too good. The minority communities in this
country would prosper if we worked harder on sticking together instead of causing separation,
and letting greed break us apart.

Now the
question is... what are we gonna do about? You have on the one hand those that want to talk
about it... militant... and others that talk about it with no hope. People have been talking about
it for decades... these aren't secrets... just information that doesn't reach our youth. I'm tired
of the militants that talk about nothing more than how the man is holding us down so lets blow
something up. I'm tired of the people that don't have anything, don't want anything, but can
find the time to complain about something they're not going to lift a finger to fix. It's not about
race, religion, or class. People being idle has no borders...

It's time that we organize
and educate, AGAIN. The work that was done has been swept under the rug. And our young
people understand little about what the civil rights movement was about, other than better stuff
for "black folks".

Beyond black, beyond white, what are you going to do for your
community? People sit around talking about finding a way to better their lifes.... and they talk
their entire lives. And in all this... they ignore what's going to make the lives of their children
and grandchildren better. what's going to make the lives of their parents and grandparents
better as they get older. Yet... the same people are the first ones to stick their hands out to get
something for nothing. "What are you gonna give me?" It's time we start asking what we're
going to give ourselves. How can ANYONE have peace of mind... driving around in some
expensive car, when there are those that don't have anything at all living right next door to
them. Turn your head? It makes no sense. "I worked hard for this. I got it on my own." Did
you? Did you really? Don't wanna give a dollar, then give knowledge.

To do anything we first need to organize then educate. And having a militant

to be more reason for them to try to shut things down, lock people up. If you stay peace and
love, and beyond the color lines, you'll have more support from everyone if something goes

I can't walk around saying... I'm going to

country... can not and will not happen that way. The ONLY way we could possibly have a
large impact is the market. Boycott everything and support only community business until
whatever is met. Billions of dollars lost in a day.

All of that is secondary... and only if they tried to hinder progress. Forget trying to take
over things in this country now. If we did, who in the hell would run it? LOL... the majority of our
minority leaders today are either ignorant, "white washed", or know how to keep quiet. Anyone
trying to boost the minority community won't stay around too long. How do you think Jesse
Jackson is still alive. :-p He's not doing much.

It shouldn't be about us against
"them". It should be about working together to make a change that's actually positive and
progressive. But it's when people are standing in our way, or trying to cause problems that we
need to make some noise. (i.e. massive boycott)

Not violence, not riots. Effective
planning. We need to raise effective leaders, we need to start programs that do more than
what they're doing right now. Democrat.... what does that really mean. LOL... people are so
lost and confuse they can't tell their rear from their faces. And it's all love though, because
most of us have been there. Most of us came from that place and from that understanding. It's
not about being mad at whomever for whatever, that doesn't get anything do. It's about find
away to get through if you can, and if you can't find other means to handle your business. (i.e.
trying to get people involved that don't want to listen. trying to tell the truth to those that don't
wanna hear it. getting people active that have "better things to do") And 9 times of out 10,
once they see progress they'll be the first to run over for assistance.

But the truth of
the matter is, none of this will truly be effective with out some level of spiritual awakening.
Why? Cuz everything with turn to crap. But if you go in preaching... you run the risk of turning
people away. So what are you going to do then....

i must say i completely agree. ORGANIZATION IS KEY!!! Unity is also a key component, cuz
we need unity to be more effective. I mean you can have organized chaos and get nothing
done. WE need unity, to be one accord that way when we have effective leaders the ones
that arent white washed and actually care about the people then we can start making some
major ass moves. And on the religious tip, i agree we help from a higher power but religion does
turn people away. There will always be dissenters but those the fuking haters and people who
dont want to comply. Ignorance is the main cause, getting redundent but again i feel u with the
education too. Education Unity and Organization are the three main components to make any
major moves in this society. I guess we one the same page now too. what about the rest of
america...
