"Los Angeles' Black Eyed Peas have their roots in break-dancing; the two founding members were part of the group Tribal Nation in high school. They soon felt the lure of hip-hop music, and left the crew to form a dance/MC group called Atban Klann (partly an acronym for A Tribe Beyond a Nation). They signed to Eazy-E's Ruthless Records in 1992, and though they recorded an album, the label was unsure how to market it alongside popular acts of the day like N.W.A., who boasted a much more violent, in-your-face style. In 1995, following the addition of another dancer/MC, a backing vocalist and a separation from Ruthless, Black Eyed Peas were born. Their blend of mike skills, positive messages, dance and hip-hop rhythms gained them a following in L.A., and 1998's "Behind the Front" was met with much critical praise. Their third release, 2003's "Elephunk," sent three of their singles onto the top 40 chart and earned them a Grammy award."

i got this from some msn celeb section about the upcoming VMA's.

Black Eyed Peas were koo before they added tha chick from "Kids Incorporated"

i've seen them 3 times live back then
they usta actually break/b-boy on stage & bring out b-boys on stage between songs & shit
& their songs were better quality back then
they didn't try to push their muzik towards tha mainstream as much as now
it was just raw MC skills

but everybody wanna make that money
so i can't hate on 'em for that

But it's still gimmicky enough to appeal to the mainstream. They used to be about truth, and being real. Now they have that once in a while, while having way more commercialized tracks.

I remember hearing about them being signed to Ruthless Records at one point. But nothing happened from that.

Anyways, before Elephunk, they had some classics. Check out their albums before that one.

I'm not a huge fan, but I definitely wouldn't say they try hard to be mainstream. They did their thing, and enough people liked it that it became mainstream.

When the Peas were on Ruthless wasnt their name "The Akbeck Klan" or something like that? I think I might have some Ruthless songs featuring them. .

Mister Mike, not everybody givin' a bad review of them are hatin', just statin' opinions
i even made sure i added that i can't hate for them wantin' they money
just so as to not consrtue it that way

i just think back when they were doin' muzik about real shit
like SevenDesigns said "They used to be about truth,"
that was when i liked their muzik

& Bone was better back in 96-98, whether they were mainstream or not
i also think BEP was better back durin' those same years too, underground or not

it's not about mainstream or underground
it's about quality of muzik & message in tha muzik

like how everybody says Bone's muzik was all about killin' & robbin' people
but alotta their songs & vids end with them gettin' caught & dyin'
there's a message with that

that's tha problem to me with muzik now days
no message about real shit
everybody now days wanna cover up problems & write shit about love & partyin'
which is not necessarily bad, but too much of anything is bad
that's why gangsta rap fizzled down to minimum after tha 90s, over load of it

btw, does anybody even remember who Jurassic 5 is?

Jurassic 5 were one of the nicest groups out there. They are up there with The Roots, and The Spooks.

They couldn't have tried harder to be mainstream.

Oh and you guys are once again hating on a talented group that happens to be in the limelight and doing well for themselves, nothing surprising though, it was all gravy back in 96-98 when Bone was all over tv and radio with their sellout hits 1st of the Month, Tha Crossroads, Look Into My Eyes, If I could Teach The World, and Ghetto Cowboy huh?
You're trying too hard, man. I said this before, but you always repeat yourself, and you always use Bone as an example. Let it go.

Besides, what was mainstream then, is a heck of a lot better now. But i'm not hating on BEP for being mainstream. I just think they are over doing their gimmicky stuff. I like songs like 'Where's The Love', and that new song about telling lies. So it's not like i'm being totally negative here.

fuck all that bone wouldnt never put out a song as gay as "Where is the love" and if they did thatd be shitty but it still wouldnt take away from the fact that they used to be good (imo they still are) whereas black eyed peas have always sucked
:smt084

and the fact that black eyed peas suck a fat dick doesnt have anything to do with mainstream/underground or any other artists it simply has to do with the fact that the black eyed peas suck. mc hammer is way better than those clowns. :angered:

Thats funny, some of their songs, like Where is the Love could EASILY have been a Bone song, and guess what, then you would have LOVED it, FACT.
just because song has a catchy chorus doesn't mean that it could easily have been a bone song...
plus actually u don't know me so you can't say what I would love and what not.

as long as they rap for the people and not the money, the music is all good. its got a tight melodic flow, but it think its more of a bone flow for chicks, not bad though..
