View Full Version : QUESTION My neck is killing me!
The Warning

About 2 to 3 days ago i was just standing there and my neck just started to cramp and throb. I though maybe my muscles were just spasming. A hour after it was still hurting and now whenever i turn my neck to the left it hurts like hell and i can't tilt it back, turn to the left or to the right very well without me wanting to cry in pain. The pain is in my upper back-left portion of my neck, i wanna say the upper "corner" of my neck. I've put a heating pad on it, ice pack, massaged it rested it and all but its still bothering me. This is the first time this has happened, is there anything i can do for it or anyone know why its doing this?

As of right now, I say use heat instead of ice. Heat does loosen up muscles and reduce pain and spasming. I would also stretch while the heat is being applied. May be a facet problem, might need to have semone mobilize the joint. Could be a muscle strain from repeated bad posture. Do you have forward head posture and a rounded back? Might be a good idea to start doing what they call chin tucks to strengthen the deep neck floxors and stretch the deep neck extensors. Add nods to your chin tucks. So chin tuck and then nod in both directions.

Wat do you mean by a rounded back and forward head posture? a facet problem? As of now the chin tucks due temporarily reduce the pain allowing me to tilt it and turn more

For some stuff i just need another person's opinion or some advice, i.e. that girl, got her # @ the end. But hey the dumb thing to do is to not ask.

Keep doing the chin tucks. When you start having pain do the chin tucks. Do them for 3 set of 15 multiple times per day. Do it even while or after applying heat. Do a chin tuck combined with extending head back and rotating side to side = 1 rep.
Are you getting any radiation of pain into your shoulder or arm with head movement?
Google forward head posture and rounded back. Most people have it to some extent. Might also want to strenghten your scapular stabilizers by doing scapular retractions (rows, etc., focusing on squeezing your scapula together) against resistance. Sets of 8 reps.
Having a rounded back will force you into forward head posture. This posture can also cause rotator cuff problems due to the forward position of the shoulders, especially if you throw a lot.
