Man my life over the past 3 weeks has taken a huge turn for the worse. Ever since I was a little kid, I had psoriasis. For those who dont know what that is, its when the skin cells produce at a faster rate then normal leaving red scales on your body. For anyone that has it knows it can be a pretty horrible thing to have to live with.

Anyways, I have been taking alot of different medication for it, most would clear it up for awhile and then not work anymore. There has been a new type of medication out there called biologics which is basically injections you give yourself once or twice a week. I have always been hessitant to take them because of the serious side effects but about two months ago I finally decided to do it. The doctor put me on a drug called Raptiva. It has clear me up quite a bit but I woke up one morning a couple of weeks ago and notice I had some back issues. Then other parts of my body has been hurting. The doctor says now that I got arthritis. So on top of psoriasis, now I got arthritis. I cant move without hurting. I even have it in my jaw which kills me to chew and eat basically anything.

The good news is that jaw arthritis normally goes away within 2-3 months even without taking anything. I just hope all the arthritis goes away cause I never been in so much pain my entire life. :frown:

I think the more frustrating thing with this is you really learn about people in your life. Whats been the hardest on me isnt the psoriasis, isnt the arthritis, but the fact that people who you thought were important in your life, dont seem to care. Yet, there's ppl on a bone board some of whom i never even have talked to that show more concern.......its amazing. I debated posting this. Normally when im in pain, I shy away from telling ppl about it. I just suck it up and pretend nothing wrong. But as older as im getting, I realize its not wrong to admit when your feeling down, when your in pain. And u know what.......this is what i needed the most. Just some support is all. Thanks everyone

I guess its true what they say..........you can learn alot bout friends and family.....when things go great, everyone is around.......when things are down.......see who sticks with you.....for they are the true friends and true ppl that care about you.

oh no!! Arthritis! I hope it goes away John! Have you somehow changed your diet or taking anything for the arthritis? I found out I got Dermatitis the other day, it got real bad on Friday/Saturday, but the creams he gave me have been working wonders!

Yeah.. I know what you mean. But you know, sometimes people - family especially, partners, sometimes aren't sure what to do. Like, when my Mum had high blood pressure, I was so lucky my Grandma was around to stay with her, I was SOOOOOOOOOOOOO scared to even comfort her! I HATED seeing her in pain like that. She was so bad we had to get the ambulance to come get her! We went to see her in hospital and I kept crying, I didn't want to see her like that! But my Mum knows I love her.

She probably does care, she does the needle for you doesn't she? If she didn't she'd tell you to learn to do it yourself. I dunno, that was a comment without much information, you need to talk to me!

I hope you get better soon!

Actually when I wrote that I wasnt just referring to her, but sadly everyone, even my doctor. I mean I went in friday to switch meds and i was asking questions and it was like he was in a rush to get outta there. Its been everyone. No one has given me any support, except here. Its amazing. I just want someone to say things will be alright or that they will be there for me, is that so hard?

Yeah she does the needle, BUT she its like she's only concerned half the time. Like she'll ask and stuff but at the same time.....ill wake up......back would be hurting like hell.....and that afternoon she'll ask me to take our tv from upstairs and carry it downstairs cause we giving lexi our tv. And im sitting there thinking.........she just doesnt get it.......maybe because im not the whiny type, she dont know how much pain im in..........but then again she should........she sees the tears in my eyes.

Sad thing is..........i really believe the Raptiva was actually starting to work on my psoriasis. Parts of my body have cleared. BUT if its at the cost of arthritis, then no. Next month im going on Humira (another injection).....this actually is for psoriasis and arthritis. Its kinda weird one medicine heals psoriasis and causes arthritis but Humira has the opposte effect on arthritis........so hopefully once im on that, arthritis and psoriasis should disappear.

aren't there any natural ways of treating psoriasis? I thought I had psoriasis but it's dermatitis!

yeah I understand you want support/comfort, it's unfortunate when even the real life people won't be like "hey I see you're upset, what's wrong." hhmm, that's a bit... rude?... you got an aching back and she gets you to carry the tv down =/ I'm sick of doctors these days, always rushing me when I know there is something wrong with me! and then I get a half assed consultation. Once I had a problem with my legs, they were all swollen and I couldn't even walk properly! the doctor didnt even LOOK at my legs! that still annoys me, to this day.

There is no cure. Pretty much drugs will keep it under control. maybe even clear it completely but then your body becomes immune and you must switch.

Usually the medications go in this order. Topical steriods (creams, ointments) stuff like that, UV Light treatment, and Injections. There's also pills you can take but the side effects dont even make them worth it in my opinion. Mild cases........usually the dermatologist will give u a cream or ointment. Thats what I had the majority of my life. Some worked better then others, but most always my body would become immune and wouldnt work anymore. UV light treatments.....you go once a week and they put you in this thing.......it helps because usually the sun is the best thing for psoriasis. But what happened with me is I got burned doing it and I swore i'd never do that again. So now im up to biologics or whatever its called. The thing with this is........while the other drugs work on the outside to try and control it, the injections actually prevent it from starting up. I definitely think that someday when a cure is found, it will have to be this way.

So thats kinda where I am at right now with this. I will say the arthritis is horrible......worse then psoriasis........i can live with psoriasis....this i dunno.....especially the jaw.....omg it hurts to eat begen.

What blows my mind is..........its everyone. I was on the phone with mom the other day and I mentioned it and it was like ok john i gotta go bye........im like damn. Does anyone care lol

Nah. Because arthritis will go away eventually. Besides, if its just a side effect of the Raptiva, then im certain once I stop, it should go away.......i hope anyways

Even if it doesnt.......I dont think that way. There's alot I wanna do before I die lol.

Plus he's putting me Humira for my psoriasis which also helps arthritis......so im just trying to get through these next couple of weeks.

See thats another thing........im not sure what type it is. It can be RA, but since I got psoriasis it can also be PA (psoriatic arthritis). I know its not curable thats why im hoping to god that its just because i was on raptiva and once it gets outta my system ill be ok. Plus the Humira should help it once i start it. I been taking tylenol and aleve and that seems to help somewhat. I dunno......i guess im just gonna have to wait a few weeks and see if it goes away or not.....i just hope it does. Im only 24 and im walking around like im 84.

I think that im beginning to understand why it seems like certain people dont care.

First off, if you never had a particular disease before, you cant possibly know how painful the disease is. I mean before this, i had heard of arthritis but I never thought it was anything to make a big deal about. I always thought, well just take some advil or whatever and it be ok. And now that I got it, I couldnt have been any more wrong. Its more painful then I could ever imagine. Its the same with all diseases tho, if u dont have it, its hard for someone else to know just how much pain your experiencing. Especially with me, I have had these issues for weeks now (not as bad but i still saw the effects awhile ago). I never said anything to anyone.....not mom, not angie not anyone. I just assumed it go away. And then when I did say something was wrong, I didnt go on and on and on about it.....thats just not how I am. So in their defense, I gotta say maybe they didnt realized the pain, because i wasnt acting like i was in major pain.

Second, if you dont know what the disease is, you cant understand how painful is it. 4 million ppl in america have this, yet im shocked at the many people who have never even heard of it or have misinterpretations about what it really is. See......if someone says they have aids or cancer, u know exactly what that is. You might not know the full pain, but u know what it is. With psoriasis.....u can say u got it, but since people arent very knowledgeable about it.....they cant possibily know how painful it is.

So thats why i think it just "seems" like no one cares.

PS Btw begen dont hate you lol. Know whats weird......i dont really go on aim or msn a whole lot but when i do im usually talking to either you or her........yet i dont think us three ever talked in one thing at the same time. I guess cause we are all on at different times.

I can't remember off the top of my head what's supposed to be good for arthritis other than copper and I believe fish oil. But I've never dealt with it to know how effective either of them are. I'm not sure about having it in the jaw though. :frown: I have heard as far as the hands and such doing exercises can help.... like the baoding balls and needle work (quilting and such).

My mom developed psoriasis out of the blue about 2 or 3 years ago. Well into her 50s, never had a problem like that before, and they can't seem to find anything to work for her. It's on the bottom of her feet an in the palms of her hands. If you've had it for a while I'm sure you know not to use perfumed soaps or lotions, and you might want to be careful about your laundry detergent as well (if you're not already). Couldn't hurt to check your diet as well. Personally I think hers came up when she started eating pork again (but I'm anti-pork anyways). My mom has done light treatments, all kinds of creams and pills and nothing really did the trick. Her hands and feet are pretty much cleared up completely. Her hands have been completely fine for a while now, but every now and then it'll come back in spots on the bottom of her feet.

Guess what she's been using.... PURE SHEA BUTTER. Go to your local african guys and get some. You should be able to find it on-line but it might cost more. It's rather oily, and hard to spread (unless you want to heat it up first). Takes a little practice to make sure you're not using too much, but it's the only thing that's helped my mom. I can't remember how long it took before she noticed a difference, but it worked and it's continuing to work. I believe emu oil is also supposed to be good for it, but she's never tried it. She never tried pure cocoa butter, so I don't know if it would work as well. There was this kit that someone got for her, a skin care it. It was very expensive and it used tea tree oil. She actually saw an improvement when she used it, but I can't remember how long she used it to know if it just wasn't long enough to completely clear it up. A lady from her job that had psoriasis bought it for her to try.

They say (as I'm sure you know) that they don't know what causes it, but diet and stress can play a role in it. Might be something to look into, if you haven't already. I'll find out the name of that system she used and post it here for you just incase you're interested. But I say definately pick up some shea butter. I will cost you about 5 to 10 dollars per pound. Don't pay more than that for it, unless you live in the boonies somewhere with no access.

I'm sorry you're not feeling so great though, and I do hope that you feel better.

*~Peace and Blessings~*

Yeah I realized with the arthritis I kinda have two options right now.......I can either just lay down all day when i come home from work (making it worse).......or I can exercise. Although exercise right now is kinda painful, im beginning to understand thats what i gottta do. I cant let this affect my life. Exercising will make the muscles around the joints stronger. I been stetching every chance I get (even at work which some ppl here must think im insane lol).

I never used shea butter before. I've always been using traditional methods mostly like creams and ointments........i did try the cocoa butter lotion tho and that seem to help at least keep the skin moist. One other thing i've noticed.....psoriasis may be triggered by allergies. I say this before I used to work in a park a couple of years ago and I would notice that it get alot worse whenever I was there. So I went to the doctor and sure enough......im allergic to grass and trees (kinda makes working at a park a bad place to be lol). I think I will definitely see about the shea butter and I too heard that the emu oil helps as well.

I also hear swimming in the Dead Sea helps greatly. But I just dont have the money for a trip like that right now lol.

LOL.... I don't know about the dead sea, but you can actually buy dead sea salt. However, I don't recall hearing that it was good for psoriasis. Have you ever thought about an allergy test (if you haven't taken them already)? I'm not sure if your family doctor would do a food allergy test, but he/she might know where you could get one done. The strangest, or should I say slightest, things can cause allergic reactions.

Emu oil you should be able to find online (just shop around for prices first) or probably at whole foods. Tea tree oil, and products containing tea tree oil should also be available at whole foods. I'm not sure about the emu oil, but tea tree oil is very strong stuff! You might be better off find somethings already diluted to a safe measurement within another product. If I'm not mistaken tea tree oil can actually burn (like some other essential oils) if you use too much of it! So I would recommend speaking with your doctor about it before trying it. My mother does not remember the name of the stuff she used, but if I recall later on my own I'll let you know. She liked the products a lot though. I just asked her how her hands and feet have been and she said she started to notice a little peeling. I asked her if she has beed using the shea butter, and she said that she hasn't been using it everyday lately. This happened before when she slacked off. But it seems like as long as she's using it daily it's ok. But it's still no where as bad as it was before! I keep her stocked in shea butter. I'll usually get 2 pounds at a time because that way I'll get it for half the price at the place I go to, and it lasts a looong time. (Everything is cheaper in bulk.) Initially she was putting a nice coat of it on at night right before bed, and using a little bit of it thoughout the day if her hands began to feel dry. (Could be why her hands cleared up better than her feet.)

Well happy hunting sweetie! I hope they work for you! :-)
