Namco breathes additional life into racing franchise; new title
due in early 2005 at the latest.
TOKYO--According to Nikkei Net and
a recently publicized earnings report from Namco, the company will release a new Ridge Racer
game sometime before the end of its 2005 fiscal year, or March 31, 2005. No specifics
regarding the platform have been disclosed.
Since the first Ridge Racer was released
on the original PlayStation in 1994, the franchise has sold a total of 10 million units worldwide,
according to Namco.
Rumors and speculation hinting at a Ridge Racer sequel have
circulated since April when the company began recruiting graphic designers for an unnamed,
new racing game.
This news means that Namco will update seven of its popular video
game franchises during its FY2005: Tekken 5 (PS2), Ace Combat 5 (PS2), Tales of Rebirth
(PS2), Death by Degrees (PS2), Xenosaga Episode II: Jenseits von Gut und Bose (PS2), Dead
to Rights II (PS2, Xbox), and the just-revealed Ridge Racer title.
