Xploder PS2 HDTV Player Update
European launch and price announced, technical FAQ.

August 4, 2006 - Xploder's recent announcement of a software solution that allows the PlayStation 2 to output High-Def resolutions, including 720p and 1080i, has stirred a great deal of interest and questions on the internet. The company released an update today, announcing European release dates and an FAQ on how the company has coaxed the PS2 to output massively higher resolutions than was previously possible.

According to the new release, the Xploder HDTV Game Player and HDTV Movie Player, previously announced as separate products, will now be combined into a single software package that shall be known as the HDTV Player for PS2. The product is currently scheduled for launch in the UK on September 1st with a suggested retail price of 29.99 Pounds, or 49.99 Euro.

Xploder's previous press releases did not reveal a great deal of information as to how the company's software achieved its up-scaling promises, and today's release answers a few of the more pressing questions, yet remains somewhat unspecific. The real test, it seems, will have to wait until the product is finally in reviews' hands.

The FAQ, as it appeared in today's release, follows:

Metal Gear Solid 3 would look insane. One of the best looking games, ever in normal standard TV resolution.

the fact that the games for ps2 weren't rendered for hd...won't really make much of a difference

Wouldn't they have thought of that before spending millions on this technology?

clearly not lol...you would have to go back and remake every single ps2 game...it's just like having an upscaling dvd player...it's only slightly better...not to the point of hd...not sure really...just an opinion

I don't know. I understand what you're saying. But this could put them in the hole so far, they couldn't get out if this bombs. I don't know if they'd risk it if they weren't sure about the technology.

Do the games have to be formatted in HD?

No, the games do not have to be formatted in HD to be used with the Xploder HDTV Player.

You can't increase the quality of the source.

Progressive mode sends twice the number of lines per frame (game permitting), so the resolution is increased vertically (interlaces games need 2 screen updates, or twice the amount of time to send the same video data).

I am sure there must be some increase in quality other wise why waste the time and money to even come out with it. It may be the type of thing where u would want to putan "HD ps2" game next to a regualr ps2 game and see the difference

Does the ps3 up grade ps2 visuals anyway? If so why would we need this new thing

The whole point of the GT4 HD was to show PS3 can upscale PS2 games. So yes, they already proved what it can do with PS2 games.

hmmm yesh it may make games look a tad bit better, but not much because the games have to be rendered in HD in order for this to work, regardless of what they say, i think it may just make things look a bit more upscale.
